Nokia E7 Review
Thursday, October 27, 2011
The long wait for Nokia E7 finally ended in Feb 2011, when the handset was launched in the market. This flagship QWERTY device from the top mobile manufacturing company of Finland is hard to ignored. The first impressions are good. Like most Nokia phones, the hardware is once again the high point. Wonderful design, strong built, impressive keyboard, all these factors work in favour of handset. But is it good enough to compete with the high-end devices of the likes of Apple, Samsung, HTC and Blackberry? Let’s go into the details to find out.

Design

This one is a stylishly built phone. The way the screen slides and the way it sits against the keyboard, makes the device very appealing. The metal case of the device gives it a sturdy look. With 176g of weight, the phone may sound a little bulky but it’s not. The screen sits at an angle of 30 degrees against the keyboard and this makes very convenient for the users to work on the keyboard and looking at the screen.

Keyboard

Nokia has done well to come up with an impressive QWERTY keyboard that is very comfortable to use. The keys are well spaced that reduces the chances of pressing a wrong key. In all, there are 42 keys that are made of rubberised plastic. By far, the Blackberry keyboards can still be considered the best but it must be said that other companies are fast catching up.

Display

The device has a huge 4.0 inch AMOLED capacitive touchscreen that is a pleasure to use. Two things that make the screen one of the best are colour and contrast. With 640x360 resolution, the device may not provide the most sharp images, but in terms of colour and contrast the screen is excellent. Also the big size of the screen makes the video watching experience a more pleasurable one. The screen provides a fair display even in the sunlight.

Camera

The camera has always been the high-point of Nokia smartphones. This one doesn’t disappoint either. The 8 mega pixel camera gives excellent images. It also has dual-LED flash that very well ensures that pictures taken in bad light remain good quality wise. The features like Geo-tagging, face detection and fixed focus are also there. Good quality videos can be recorded as well. Overall, the camera may not be as good as the 12 mega pixel camera of Nokia N8, but it does a decent job.
Memory, RAM and Processor.

The phone runs on 680 MHz ARM 11 processor and has 256 MB RAM. The device is quite capable of multi tasking and can handle several applications at one go. The storage space is an impressive 16 GB. The company has chosen not to keep any card slot, but with 16 GB of internal storage available, there is little the users can complain about.

Operating System

This is an important factor where there can be an argument. The reason being, Nokia has chosen to run the device with Symbian OS. The company has already announced its partnership with Microsoft and that it will soon shift to Windows 7 OS. This may make Symbian OS a thing of the past. However, in spite of all these talks, Symbian works smoothly and for most people this factor should not be a deal breaker when it comes to buying this device.

Battery

Nokia phone are well known for good battery life. This device once again proves it. The 3G and 2G talk time of Li-Ion 1200 mAh battery is 5 hrs and 9 hrs respectively. The stand by time is 480 hrs (3G) and 432 hrs (2G). With moderate usage, the phone can easily exceed these number and the battery does not prove to a problem for the users.

Final Words

The hardware of the device is simply gorgeous. Any concerns about the usability of Symbian OS get removed once you start using the device. The sliding design, convenient QWERTY keyboard, decent camera and a sturdy feel of the device make it a decent smartphone. The phone is aimed more at the business users but it equally suits other users as well. For a non Symbian user, it may take a little while to get used to the device but for somebody who already is a Symbian user, it’s a fantastic device.
