HTC Desire S Review
Thursday, October 27, 2011
HTC Desire S is the upgraded version of the original Desire smartphone. The latest device is not a phone that comes with a lot of changes but it simply carries forward everything that its predecessor brought in the market. No doubt, the original phone was one of the best and most successful phones from the Taiwanese company. The upgraded device, released in Mar 2011, delivers on all counts. Without too much of an overhaul, the company has launched a handset that competes with the best in the market. Can the latest device achieve the same popularity and success as the original device did? Let’s see in detail what all the device has to offer and how well it delivers what it promises.

1) Design

Like all HTC phones, the device feels solid in hand. The device is 11.6mm thick and it weighs 130g that makes it fairly thin and light. Even though, it cannot beat some of the slim and light smartphones (read Samsung galaxy S II) available in the market, that shouldn’t bother anyone at all. The built quality is solid and its comfortable to hold. The new metal body of the device makes it better looking and stronger than the original one. There are no physical buttons on the device that makes it appear longer.

2) Display

Unlike the bodywork, there are not any changes when it comes to the display. The screen type, size and the resolution are all the same. The 3.7 inch screen comes with Super LCD technology and retains the 480x800 resolution. The screen provides excellent viewing angles and has good visibility even in direct sunlight. Though, the display may not be as good as one can find on iPhone4 or Galaxy SII, but the display remains one of the best. The screen of the device is similar to its predecessor but the major difference is the removal of optical trackpad and physical buttons. Instead, the device has touch-sensitive buttons.

3) User Interface

The device comes with Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) OS. The OS combined with Sense UI makes the device work well. Since the predecessor ran on 2.1 (Éclair) that was upgradable to 2.2 (Froyo) version, there is a noticeable improvement in the interface of the device. The menu is easy to navigate and the users get multiple home screens where they can keep various apps and widgets. All the screens can also be viewed together in the leap view.

4) Internet

Web-browsing on the device is delightful. The 3G speed is good and Wi-Fi can be used to establish a fast connection. The pages load fast and the whole browsing experience is smooth. Multiple windows can be opened at one go and bookmarks can be added as well and the browser supports Flash 10.2 that allows videos to load easily. Apart from these there are a number of useful features that make the browser work fast.

5) Camera

The company has kept the same 5 mega pixel camera that the original phone had. Though, the company has not gone for a higher mega pixel camera but no there is an option of recording videos at 720p that improves the video quality. Auto focus, geo-tagging and smile detection features are available to the users. Outdoors, the image quality is excellent and inside Flash can be used to brighten the surroundings.

6) Video and Music

Video quality is superb on the device. The big screen size and excellent display quality combine together and provide great video watching experience. The videos of all kind run smoothly and the colour quality is superb. Similarly, the music player works well. The users have the option of listening to their favourite songs on FM Radio as well. With 3.5 mm jack, the headphones can be attached with the device to enhance the audio quality.

7) Battery

No doubt, a poor battery takes half the fun out of any gadget. HTC Desire S is a powerful device and the company doesn’t disappoint when it comes to the battery of this device. The Li-Ion 1450 mAh battery promises good talk time and very well delivers on its promise. The device runs for adequate amount of time before it is required to be charged again.

8) Apps

The apps can’t be ignored, especially when we’re talking about this device. The reason being the device comes with a number of apps that are very useful as well as entertaining. With Facebook, QuickOffice, Reader ebook and Twitter apps apart from other useful apps allow users not only to stay connected but also perform useful functions on the device. Besides the pre-installed apps, there is a whole world of Android apps available to the users.

Final Words

As we mentioned, the device is not a major upgrade. But the point is, do we need to repair anything if it is not broken in the first place? HTC Desire S is an appealing device that takes forward the success of the original Desire phone. Though it’s not a path-breaking device like its predecessor was when it was first launched, but with solid design and advanced features the phone can be recommended to anyone and everyone.
